Beneath the graveyards of Ehb, an ancient crypt awaits—its halls overrun with grotesque creatures and restless undead. Players must navigate its depths, uncovering long-buried secrets hidden within the ruins of this forsaken landmark. What lies in the abyss, and what horrors guard its mysteries? Developed by Massive Black, Room 8 Studio, and Square Enix, this level brings Dungeon Siege’s Crypt to life in The Sandbox, blending atmospheric design with immersive world-building. Explore the thought process behind its creation and design, and step into a realm where the past refuses to stay buried.

Conception

During the pre-production and conceptualization phases of The Crypt, our primary objective was to retain the thematic integrity of the original experience while enhancing it with modernized mechanics and refined level design. The development process followed a top-down approach, beginning with the graveyard surface and extending into the crypt’s depths, ensuring a structured progression in both gameplay and atmosphere.

The level underwent multiple iterations, incorporating terrain overhauls, mechanic refinements, and optimized layouts to achieve a polished and engaging experience. As players descend deeper, the environment shifts dynamically, increasing in tension, environmental storytelling, and enemy complexity, leading to a climactic encounter that reinforces the game’s core themes. Beyond environmental and mechanical design, narrative integration played a key role. The story unfolds through Ulora the Scribe, a central figure guiding players through centuries-old cryptic lore, deepening immersion and reinforcing exploration-driven storytelling within the game world.

The journey begins in the Graveyard of Ehb, a desolate, fog-laden expanse where ancient mysteries linger in the shadows. Here, players encounter Ulora the Scribe, a scholar from Stonebridge, whose research has led her to uncover a long-standing enigma buried within the crypt’s depths. Convinced that an unseen force has plagued these lands, she enlists the player’s aid in unraveling its secrets. The alliance is immediately tested as hostile skeletal forces ambush the duo, introducing an early combat scenario that establishes enemy behavior, attack patterns, and player response mechanics. With the threat neutralized, players are encouraged to push forward, progressing through increasingly complex enemy encounters and narrative-driven objectives.

As players descend into the crypt, environmental hazards and enemy variety escalate, introducing new mechanics and challenges. Encounters include aggressive oversized rats, towering mummies guarding ancient passageways, and spectral skulls that engage in ranged attacks, each requiring adaptation and strategic resource management. The level is structured to reinforce progression-based difficulty, ensuring a steady increase in combat intensity and environmental complexity. The crypt itself presents mechanics-driven obstacles, demanding precise navigation, puzzle-solving, and combat proficiency. Each section is designed to gradually reveal the crypt’s history, with narrative clues integrated into environmental storytelling, item discoveries, and NPC interactions. These elements culminate in a high-stakes climax, where players must synthesize gathered knowledge, adapt to the final confrontation, and resolve the crypt’s lingering mystery.

The level design and pacing ensure that players not only engage in action-driven encounters but also experience an unfolding narrative that challenges both gameplay execution and problem-solving skills.

The Crypt introduces a variety of mechanics-driven challenges designed to reinforce its horror atmosphere and gameplay tension. Players must navigate airborne skull barriers, which create constant environmental pressure, forcing precise movement and positioning to avoid being pushed into danger.

Additionally, interactive grave mechanics heighten enemy encounters—when disturbed, these graves trigger waves of skeletal enemies, dynamically altering combat scenarios and ensuring that each engagement remains unpredictable. These mechanics work in tandem to create a hostile, reactive environment, emphasizing both spatial awareness and strategic decision-making as players progress deeper into the crypt.

The Crypt include a variety of Monsters and enemies. We made a special point to keep the design of the creatures the same as the original. A few creatures from the experience are featured below.
